White House slashes red tape to boost economy

On May 26 the White House unveiled a series of measures to cut back on burgeoning red tape and simplify rules which it said could save U.S. businesses "billions" of dollars over the coming years. The administration hopes the move will lift some of the burdens from struggling companies and give fresh impetus to the faltering jobs market with unemployment still hovering around 9 percent. More

Square announces mobile POS system for brick-and-mortar merchants

During a short press conference, Square CEO Jack Dorsey announced the release of the Square Register, a new product aimed at small brick-and-mortar establishments. Dorsey said the Square Register, an iPad application linked to the Square credit card reader, allows small merchants to accept cash and credit card purchases and is intended to replace the traditional cash register and credit card terminal. Dorsey said the integrated app and reader has a much smaller footprint and is a simpler approach for small businesses. More

Norbert Holthenrich was elected as the new president by a large majority at the Delegates Conference of the German Pet Trade & Industry Association (ZZF) in Dresden on May 21, 2011. The 52-year-old is the proprietor of the Zoo-Shop pet shop in Osnabrück and has been a member of the ZZF board for 12 years. More

Malaseb antimicrobial shampoo returns to market

Teva Animal Health announced that Malaseb Shampoo, an antimicrobial, has returned to the market after an almost two-year sabbatical. In July 2009, the Food and Drug Administration issued a consent decree after finding significant cGMP violations at the company's St. Joseph, Mo., facilities during inspections between 2007 and 2009. Texas legislature passes anti-pet bill

Representative Senfronia Thompson wielded her considerable power as a senior member of the legislature and Chair of the Committee on Local and Consent Calendars to ensure Senate adoption of House Bill 1451. The amended version of her bill to establish the "Dog or Cat Breeders Act" was little changed from that which passed the House at the end of April. As PIJAC noted in its original PetAlert on this bill, the measure creates a comprehensive new breeder licensing scheme in the state. More
