Senator Richard J. Durbin, D-IL, and Representative Samuel S. Farr, D-CA, introduced companion bills in the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively, titled the Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety Act (PUPS). This legislation amending the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), which was introduced in similar form in the 110th Congress, would modify the current retail exemption relative to "high volume breeders" and incorporate new requirements for the exercise of dogs, including facility standards for exercise areas. FDA launches animal food pilot program

Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine launched on June 4, 2010 the beginning of a pilot program to accept and review GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) notices for substances used in animal food. Through the program, individuals, also referred to as the "notifier" by the FDA, can submit "notices of claims that a particular use of a substance in food for animals is exempt from the statutory premarket approval requirements based on the individual's determination that such use is GRAS." FDA, NIH launch Website for reporting pet food and drug safety issues

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched a new website that allows consumers to report safety problems related to pet food, treats and drugs. The Safety Reporting Portal is designed to provide consumers, veterinarians, animal drug manufacturers and others in the food and drug industries with a mechanism to report pre- and post-market safety information to the federal government. After initially cooperating with Matter of Trust, a San Francisco-based not-for-profit currently dedicated to putting cast-off human and animal hair to good use, BP abruptly changed course when its Government and Public Relations Department issued a May 21 press release officially rescinding its interest in pet hair booms. In so doing, it explained the synthetic commercial booms were "superior" because of natural fiber's lack of buoyancy. This came as a shock to Lisa Gautier, Matter of Trust founder. "Hair is free and renewable. It works. Why wouldn't they want it?" More
