Petco stops use of kennel dryers, fires groomers caring for dog who died

A woman in Virginia recently left her healthy 2-year-old golden retriever at a Petco store for a routine bath and grooming. The store called her and asked to meet at a nearby veterinary clinic, where she learned that her dog was dead. Petco has now taken full responsibility for this incident, and says that the grooming salon workers involved have been fired.

US pet medication market to top $10 billion by 2018

Packaged Facts, a market research firm based in Rockville, Maryland, released the report "Pet Medications in the U.S.: Over-the-Counter and Prescription Remedies as Consumer Products, 3rd Edition," which projects pet medications sales will grow to more than $10 billion by 2018 from where they were in 2013 at $7.6 billion. The projected grow represents a compound annual growth rate of 5 percent.

NYC puppy-sale restrictions anger pet shops

A pair of recent New York City laws to end "puppy mills" will actually cause the deaths of more dogs, the pet shop industry says in Federal Court. The New York Pet Welfare Association filed suit June 1 to challenge the City Council's passage of Local Laws 5 and 7, which took effect that same day. Based in New Jersey, the association describes itself as a nonprofit trade group, "formed to ensure that pet owners continue to have access to healthy, humanely treated, purebred puppies."

Pet health insurance industry in North America posts record growth in 2014

North America's pet health insurance sector posted record growth this year, with combined total premiums hitting $660.5 million in 2014, and the total number of pets insured reaching 1.4 million, according to the "NAHIA State of the Industry Report." This represents a 12.8 percent hike in gross written premiums over 2013, on 10.6 percent more pets.
