America's love affair with small business

A February Gallup poll that tested Americans' reactions to seven terms, including "capitalism" and "socialism," found that "small business" got the best reaction, with a 95 percent positive rating across the political spectrum. In a recent poll by the Pew Research Center, small business owners got better ratings than any other institution the survey asked about, including churches, colleges, and the news media. The results this year build upon similar results in the recent past. More

Procter & Gamble issues limited recall of Iams ProActive Health cat food

The Procter & Gamble Co. has issued a voluntary recall of certain lots of its Iams canned cat food due to concerns of low thiamine levels. The Cincinnati-based company is recalling all varieties of its Iams ProActive Health canned cat and kitten food in 3- and 5.5-ounce cans with "Best if Fed By" dates ranging from 09/2011 to 06/2012 printed on the bottom. The recall is limited to North America. More

Arkansas pet food plant to expand, add jobs

A pet food plant in Dumas that was badly damaged in a 2007 tornado is under new ownership that plans to expand and nearly double the number of jobs. Officials with Dad's Pet Care of Meadville, Pa., said the company will spend $10 million and add 44 jobs to the southeast Arkansas facility. More

Since 2008, greyhounds no longer run in Colorado, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. In Iowa this spring, Harrah's Inc. offered the state millions of dollars to amend a law requiring live racing at Dubuque's Mystique Casino and Harrah's-owned Bluffs Run in Council Bluffs. Had it become law, the bill would have guaranteed the slow death of Iowa's greyhound industry beginning July 1. Although the bill didn't make it to the floor for a vote, it isn't the first time lawmakers have discussed the issue, and it won't be the last. More

The spreading popularity of topical hormone treatments in people — especially but not exclusively menopausal women — is having unintended medical consequences for the users' pets. Spayed dogs and young female puppies are showing up in veterinary exam rooms with markedly swollen vulvas as if they are in heat.
