San Francisco considers banning the sale of all pets

The first vision was simple and straightforward: To curtail puppy mills and kitten factories, the sale of cats and dogs should be banned in San Francisco, where the loving guardians of animal companions come to regular blows — politically — with the loving parents of children. The ban was put on hold last year after animal advocates broadened it to include anything with fur or feathers. Now it's back, with a new name and a new strategy: More is more. More

Glendale, California considers ordinance to ban sale of dogs and cats

The Glendale, California City Council voted unanimously at its June 14 meeting to draft an ordinance which would ban the retail sale of commercially bred dogs and cats in the city. The Council will vote again on the adoption of the ordinance once language is drafted. A date for that vote has yet to be determined. More

Contech buys US pet health company

Contech Enterprises is growing for the future — and returning to the past — as the manufacturer of animal training and control products has returned to pet products with the purchase of a San Diego company. Contech, which started in pet products in 1987 with the Scat Mat — a product since sold to PetSafe — that helped train cats and dogs to stay off the furniture, has acquired G&B Marketing, a family-owned business which develops products for the health and wellness of pets. Ellen DeGeneres Halo holistic pet food Pet Foundation donated $70,000 in disaster relief grants to eight animal welfare groups, in response to tornados and flooding in the southern U.S. Grant recipients include Noah's Wish, a nationwide group; Save our Pets Food Bank and SOS Club in Georgia; Arkansans for Animals in Arkansas; Blount County Animal Shelter and Second Chance Animal Sanctuary in Alabama; Paws, Claws 'N More Rescue in Kentucky; and McKamey Animal Center in Tennessee. Funds for the disaster relief grants were raised at the 3rd Annual PETCO Foundation Gala. More

Judge orders BioPet, PetSafe to stop selling dog breed ID kits

An appellate court judge has denied a request by BioPet Vet Lab Inc. and PetSafe, both of Knoxville, Tenn., to stop an injunction that prohibits them from selling their dog breed identification test kits. The injunction was requested by Mars Veterinary as part of a patent infringement lawsuit it filed against the two companies. More
