Many say the U.S. economy is still in a recession based on the fact that unemployment is still high and consumers are continuing to temper their spending habits — two elements that define a recession. However, anyone with the desire to be an entrepreneur has to have the attitude of my friend with the bumper sticker: "Refuse to Participate in the Recession." More

San Francisco considers ban on sale of pets

The San Francisco Commission of Animal Control and Welfare expects to vote at its next meeting on a recommendation to enact an ordinance that would prohibit the sale of pets by pet stores. The proposal originally targeted dogs and cats, but as voted on by the Commission appears likely to include other species as well and potentially ban all pets. PIJAC is urging those who support the right to have pets to contact members of the Commission, as well as the Board of Supervisors, in opposition to this blatant anti-pet proposal. More

United Pet Group voluntarily recalls vitamin supplement for dogs

Rolf C. Hagen Inc. has reported that its 54,000-square-foot global headquarters in Montréal, Quebec, has received LEED certification from the Canada Green Building Council. There are four levels of LEED certification — certified, silver, gold and platinum. Hagen's headquarters building, which opened in July 2006, has received gold certification, the company reported. Pet food plant in Dumas, Ark., to expand, add jobs

A company that bought a pet food plant in Dumas earlier this year said that it plans to spend $10 million to expand and hire another 44 people, helping the city build on its recovery from a devastating tornado in 2007. The tornado in February 2007 damaged or destroyed 80 percent of the businesses in the city of 5,300 residents and left about 800 people at least temporarily out of work. More than two dozen people were injured but no one was killed by twister. More

Effort uses dogs' DNA to track their abusers

Scientists and animal rights advocates have enlisted DNA evidence to do for man's best friend what the judicial system has long done for human crime victims. They have created the country's first dog-fighting DNA database, which they say will help criminal investigators piece together an abused animal's history by establishing ties among breeders, owners, pit operators and the animals themselves. Luxury pet care resort to open at Walt Disney World

Your pets don't have to be left out when you go to Walt Disney World. The new Best Friends Pet Care Resort will start accepting pets starting August 27. The property is more than 50,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, including 17,000 square feet of air-conditioned indoor space, 10,000 square feet of covered outdoor runs and play areas and a private dog park. There is a grooming salon that offers baths and haircuts. The facility will accommodate up to 270 dogs and 30 cats for both daytime and overnight boarding. More
