Webrooming is the new showrooming — and other retail trends

A new concept facing consumers and retailers now is webrooming. Consumers look online for different products and then go to the brick-and-mortar store to make the purchase. There are many reasons for this action, but one of the most common is the consumer wants information. Instead of going to the store itself and asking an employee about the product, the consumer does his or her own research ahead of time.

Petland CEO fights pet shop bans

Since 2007, nearly 50 cities throughout the U.S. have effectively outlawed retail pet shops in response to growing concerns that puppy mills are feeding their inventory. Petland, the nation's largest chain of stores that sell puppies, has been biting back at animal rights groups that push for local bans in communities across the country.

"Innovation is very delicate," said Richard Thompson, CEO of Freshpet, a fresh, all-natural, refrigerated pet food. "Risk taking is important. Retailers have to put a fridge in their stores to sell our product. That was hard to sell at the beginning."

Petsense hits century mark with store opening

Petsense, a nationwide pet supply retailer, opened its 100th location — a 5,000-square-foot store it constructed in Athens, Tennessee — on June 25. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based chain reached the century milestone less than a decade after it was founded in 2005. The company expects to grow at even a faster rate over the next five years.
