How legalization of marijuana impacts the veterinary world

Recreational marijuana is now legal in four states and Washington, D.C., and 19 more states have legal medical access. The use of the drug is rising in the United States, and the states who have legalized it for recreational use have seen a huge amount of money come in through taxes. It is estimated that if all 50 states were to legalize, they could be making more than $3 billion a year in taxes alone. While this money may be a motivator for some industries, others are starting to see the effects of the day-to-day use of this drug, causing them to think about the benefits versus the damage it could cause.

FTC pushes for more competition in pet medications market
AVMA
The Federal Trade Commission released a report in May finding that veterinarians will continue to face increasing competition from nonveterinary retailers for pet medication sales — and recommending ways to make the pet medications market even more competitive. The FTC began exploring the subject of pet medications largely in light of introduction of the Fairness to Pet Owners Act, which would require veterinarians to provide pet owners with written prescriptions in every instance.

A new bill to allow cemeteries to bury deceased pets with their former owners was discussed during a Joint Committee on Public Health hearing June 23. Massachusetts law currently prohibits cemeteries from letting humans and animals be buried together.
