Due to salmonella concerns, United Pet Group of Cincinnati has expanded its recent recall of its Pro-Pet Adult Daily Vitamin tablets for dogs to include additional branded and private label pet care products. The expanded recall, issued July 2, includes more Pro-Pet products as well as various Excel-branded and private label pet supplements and clean-up products for cats and dogs. More

As Philip Gerrie tells it, the idea of banning pet sales in San Francisco started simply enough, with a proposal to outlaw puppy and kitten mills. West Hollywood, Calif. had done it, with little fanfare. Why not the city of St. Francis, patron saint of animals, which prides itself on its compassion toward all creatures great and small?The idea came back to bite the commission. Vienna is the latest city to crack down on 'dangerous' dog breeds

Last week, Vienna, Austria passed a controversial new law that will require the owners of so-called "fight dogs" to carry a license proving they can keep their pets in check. Alexander Willer, a spokesman for Vienna's main animal shelter, told the Associated Press that the list of affected dogs — including rottweilers, pit bull terriers, mastiffs, and others — was compiled "at random." He added that this kind of discrimination makes it harder for abandoned dogs of these breeds to find new homes. More



Dog bloat survey seeks participants

Two researchers have launched an online survey to obtain information relevant to bloat, a condition in which a dog has a distended stomach. The survey is open to veterinarians, dog owners and breeders who have a dog that has had bloat. The survey also asks for information on dogs that haven't bloated. More

Although no illnesses had been reported, and after potentially contaminated products had been removed from store shelves, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to use Merrick Beef Filet Squares for dogs with a package date of "Best By 111911" because the product may be contaminated with salmonella.
