Senate votes to include $30 billion lending fund in small business aid package

Small business lending may get a boost thanks to a controversial $30 billion fund for community banks. The Senate voted late Thursday 60-37 to include the proposed program — which would direct up to $30 billion in taxpayer money via regional banks — in a package of aid for small businesses. Two Republicans joined with Democrats to support the amendment. President Barack Obama also supports the measure. More

An initiative to ban the sale of dogs and cats in El Paso moved another step closer to passage as the City Council scheduled the proposal for introduction on next week's regular agenda. A date for public hearing on the proposal has been set for August 10, 2010. The Council generally does not accept public comment during introduction of ordinances. The proposal would ban the sale of dogs and cats by pet stores as of September 1, 2010, although it does include a grandfather clause covering animals already in a pet store prior to that date. More

Latin Americans are spending more money on products and services for their pets despite the poor economy, according to an online article from The Independent. A July 15 report from Euromonitor International indicated that Latin American and Caribbean pet owners are spending more money than previously on pet care goods and services, such as petfood, toys, fashion accessories, health care and grooming.
