Pet industry groups fund research for better dog breeding standards

Pet industry heavyweights — the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, the Pet Food Institute (both in Washington, D.C.), and Monrovia, California's World Pet Association — are jointly funding a Purdue University research project that aims to "develop, implement as a pilot project and evaluate ... science-based standards for the care and welfare of dogs raised by commercial breeders." The two-year research study will be conducted by Purdue's Center for Animal Welfare Science in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Petmate unveils Jackson Galaxy Collection, other new products

With more than 175 products, which include pet toys, kennels, carriers, auto-feeding and -watering units, collars and leashes, and other gear for dogs, cats and birds, on display at SuperZoo, it would seem that Petmate brought its entire product catalog to Las Vegas. In addition, the Arlington, Texas-based pet gear manufacturer debuted more than 25 new products, including the new co-branded Jackson Galaxy Collection by Petmate, a line of cat toys developed with input from Jackson Galaxy of Animal Planet's "My Cat From Hell" TV series.

Survey: More than 70 percent of apartment renters own pets

More than 70 percent of apartment renters reported owning pets, with cats and dogs as the most popular types, according to a survey. Despite the high pet ownership numbers, the survey by Apartments.com found that it may still be hard for renters to find a pet-friendly apartment.
