Harvard Business Review Blog Network    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Across industries, companies are using the vast amounts of user-generated data to guide innovation of new products and services. But data mining does not equate to developing "customer intelligence." Human behavior is nuanced and complex, and no matter how robust it is, data can provide only part of the story. Pet food safety: Fortify weak links in your supply chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Stephen F. Sundlof, DVM, PhD, writes, "As the former director of both the US Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine and Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, I have seen my share of pet and human food outbreaks caused by defective supply chains. In 2007, the largest petfood recall in history resulted from a single ingredient — wheat gluten — that had been intentionally adulterated with melamine for economic gains.
