The Pets in the Classroom grant program is nearly halfway to its goal of placing pets in 30,000 classrooms, said Steve King, executive director of The Pet Care Trust, which established the program in 2009. In an attempt to reach 1 million schoolchildren, the Bel Air, Md., charitable foundation kicked off two campaigns this month: Tell a Teacher and Sponsor a Teacher. More

New York county contemplating animal abuse registry

The Westchester County, New York Board of Legislators is considering establishing a county registry for animal abuse offenders. The proposed local law states that any pet dealer, SPCA, humane society, pound, or animal shelter must check the registry before selling an animal to a consumer. Any entity who sells to a registered animal abuser will be guilty of a class A misdemeanor. More

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and LegalZoom.com are encouraging pet owners to create legal documents that will protect their pets' futures when the owners die. LegalZoom will donate 10 to 15 percent of the purchase price of Pet Protection Agreements bought through the partnership with the ASPCA. More
