California bill mandating monthly dog transfer reports advances

A California bill that sets forth new reporting requirements for pet dealers and breeders is poised for a final vote by the state Senate. Assembly Bill 1121 would require any pet dealer, humane society, rescue group, SPCA, or dog breeder to submit monthly reports on dog transfers to the local government entity that is responsible for licensing dogs. More

DVMInsight joins Idexx Laboratories

Telemedicine firm DVMInsight of San Diego joined Idexx Laboratories of Westbrook, Maine, Idexx reported. DVMInsight CEO Matt Wright, DVM, MS, DACVR, and CTO Stephen Walters became part of the leadership team at Idexx Laboratories' Telemedicine Consultants division and will continue to oversee the DVMInsight technology platform used by independent radiologists. AWA amendment regulates importation of dogs

Provisions within the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 imposed new restrictions on the importation of dogs into the United States. While the statutory restrictions imposed by that Act are technically already in effect, the measure also called for adoption of regulatory standards to implement the law. The USDA's Animal Plant Health Inspection Service has published a proposed rule implementing these import restrictions and calling for public comment on the proposal no later than Oct. 31, 2011. Drug shortage leaves pets without basic treatment

Central Florida veterinarians are facing a shortage of basic medications including antibiotics, anesthetics and chemo drugs used on both people and pets. Several human drugs are allowed to be used on pets under certain conditions. Dr. Teresa Goodson, a veterinarian with Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Maitland, said the shortages usually come without warning. More

Imperial Capital acquires Nutri-Vet

Imperial Capital Group of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, reported that it has acquired Nutri-Vet LLC, the owner of Nutri-Vet and Best Pet Health brands. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Nutri-Vet markets vitamin-supplements, joint-care, dental-care and other health-focused products for dogs, cats and equines. Its products are sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico. More
