California lawmakers approve pet insurance bill

Pets could soon receive better health care benefits than their human masters under a pet insurance measure that was passed by the California State Assembly. After winning a 42-22 vote, the bill will now be reviewed by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. It will require insurance firms that offer veterinary care plans to disclose all the details and limits of pet insurance coverage. More

Jacksonville, Fla. officials mull pet trade regulations

City officials in Jacksonville, Fla., have introduced an ordinance that seeks to amend regulations governing the pet industry, including pet retailers and dealers. The city council is scheduled to hold a third reading and possibly vote on the ordinance at its Sept. 14 meeting. More

Guilford County, N.C. Board of Commissioners to amend county animal control ordinance

The Guilford County Board of Commissioners will hold a hearing on Thursday, Sept. 16, to discuss possible revisions to the county's animal control ordinance. Proposed amendments include adding new sections pertaining to requirements for breeders and retailers, dangerous mammal regulations and permit requirements to own exotic animals. The proposal also includes many new definitions and a fee schedule for civil penalties for violators. More

Nestle to buy US dog food company Waggin' Train

Nestle, the world's biggest foods group, is buying privately owned U.S. dog snacks business Waggin' Train, the group said on Friday, to boost its presence in a fast-growing segment of the pet foods market. Nestle did not give any details on the price of the deal, which had already received U.S. regulatory approval and is expected to be completed by the end of September. More
