USDA cracks down on Internet pet sales

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has narrowed the definition of a retail pet store in a move that brings more Internet animal sellers under federal oversight. The government issued a final rule that is expected to affect up to 4,640 dog breeders, 325 cat breeders and 75 rabbit breeders nationwide.

Lawsuit claims Whole Foods sold unapproved pet products

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation accused Whole Foods Market of not fully cooperating in an investigation into the sale of unregistered pet products. The department, which oversees the regulation, sale and use of pesticides, is concerned about four products: 365 Natural Pine Pellets Cat Litter, Purely Botanical Cat Flea Spray, Purely Botanical Dog Flea Spray and Environmental Bugs R Done bug spray.

Controversial teeth cleaning for pets pops up in Calgary

Alberta's veterinarians are raising concerns about advertisements for anesthetic-free teeth cleaning on dogs and cats. "It's in your house, you don't have to put them under. Obviously it's not as expensive as if you take them to a vet," said dog owner Amber Forsythe.

Dog may have post-traumatic stress disorder

Q: My friend's dog came from a shelter and must have had some terrible experiences. At times, and for no reason that I can understand, when I am around the dog he will charge me. I do not understand what I am doing. It seems to happen when I am close to my friend. At other times, he will come to me for petting, wagging his tail. He has some other issues — flashing lights, thunder, charging when someone is picking up something off the floor, when I get close to his food bowl, mail trucks, mail carriers and other odd things. Can you explain why he is acting strangely toward me at certain times? He has me baffled.
