Is the hotel industry going to the dogs? It sure looks that way, and there won't be many dog owners complaining. In a TripAdvisor survey of more than 1,100 pet owners in the United States, nearly half said they plan to travel with their animal within the next 12 months. Nearly all of those people who plan to travel with pets will go by car, and 58 percent said they expect to stay in a pet-friendly hotel. More

FDA establishes foodborne illness outbreak response network

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today a streamlined, integrated approach to effectively and rapidly respond to human and animal foodborne illness outbreaks: The FDA Coordinated Outbreak Response and Evaluation (CORE) Network. The CORE Network is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team of epidemiologists, veterinarians, microbiologists, environmental health specialists, emergency coordinators, and risk communications specialists. Working full-time on outbreak prevention and response at headquarters, the CORE is complemented by trained, experienced investigators in FDA field offices nationwide. More

Florida officials warn of invading massive 'pet' snails

State officials are warning about a new invasive species taking over south Florida — African land snails, introduced illegally as pets. The snails quickly destroy vegetation, eat stucco off houses and just one snail can lay 1,200 eggs a year. The snails can also carry a deadly parasite that causes meningitis in humans. More
