Jacksonville, Fla., City Council amends proposed animal ordinance in time for Oct. 12 meeting

The Jacksonville, Florida, City Council has issued a substitute proposed animal ordinance to be considered at the Ccuncil's Oct. 12 meeting. The council heard the ordinance in its original form at an August meeting, but made substantial changes to the language. The changes include an added definition for "hobby breeder" as well as permits for hobby breeders and occasional sellers. This new version also places limits on the number of animals which "animal dealers" and "hobby breeders" may maintain and sell. More

Mohave County, Ariz., kennel ordinance advances

The Mohave County Kennel Committee has recommended amendments to an existing kennel ordinance, which will now go before the full Board of Supervisors. Supervisors are scheduled to consider the proposal at the Board's Monday Oct. 4, 2010 hearing. Proposed amendments include extensive provisions governing the minimum required land for kennels as well as permit requirements. More

Vet groups take on cat heartworm resistance

Resistance to heartworm products is a possibility, but current preventive strategies must be used until additional research is complete, according to the Companion Animal Parasite Council and the American Heartworm Society. The two organizations made the announcement after a roundtable meeting in late August to discuss scientific and clinical field observations concerning resistance to heartworm products, including reported failures and perceived loss of efficacy.
