Pet Care Trust sees big boost in Pets in the Classroom grant program applicants

The Pet Care Trust is pleased to announce that its Pets in the Classroom program received 3,500 requests for grants in the program's first fifteen months. The program, established by the Pet Care Trust in 2009, provides grants of $100-$150 to purchase or adopt a new pet and required equipment or $50 to support existing classroom pets. Nearly 1,600 of the grants were redeemed at pet stores for aquariums, guinea pigs, hamsters, reptiles, amphibians and birds. With an average classroom size of 30 students, the Trust has brought a pet into the lives of 48,000 kids. More

California city bans retail cat, dog sales

The Irvine, Calif., city council approved by a margin of 4-to-1 an ordinance that will ban the retail sale of dogs and cats in the city. The vote came after 53 speakers, fairly closely divided between supporters and opponents, participated in a public hearing. The bill will also ban rodeos and circuses with large animals, such as elephants and tigers, from taking place in the city. More

FDA delays implementing food import re-examination fees

After critical assessments from a coalition established by LLC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it will not initiate the new food import re-examination fee program until some issues with the program are resolved. According to Benjamin England, founder and CEO of LLC, and its newly established Food Importers and Foreign Food Manufacturer's Coalition Task Force, these actions represent a major initial victory for small food businesses and food importers.
