California intact animal cap bill vetoed

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed Assembly Bill 241, which would have limited the number of intact dogs and cats any person could own for breeding and selling as pets. "I support measures designed to prevent animal cruelty and that punish persons engaged in the abuse of animals," the governor wrote in a memo to the members of the California Assembly. "However, this measure simply goes too far in an attempt to address the serious problem of puppy mills." MORE

Cat microchipping effort breaks record

Breaking the Guinness record book - or maybe it's a Garfield record book - 59,074 cats were microchipped and enrolled in the HomeAgain Pet Recovery Program from June through August. For the second consecutive summer, HomeAgain donated $1 per cat 'chipped to the non-profit Winn Feline Foundation. "It's amazing news for so many reasons," says Dr. Susan Little, a feline veterinarian in Ottawa, Ont., Canada. "In this type of economy, the commitment to cat health is more important than ever." Recently released survey results from Petco indicate consumers want to feed their pets the same level of healthy, nutritious food that humans enjoy, but they don't really understand how to choose a healthy food for their pets. In response, the company has teamed up with its own experts, suppliers and external pet nutrition experts to launch an educational effort for store personnel and consumers based on understanding premium pet nutrition. Possibility of mold prompts dry food recall

A third pet food company in as many weeks has pulled some of its products off the market. Wysong Pet Food confirmed that it recalled five batches of Canine Diets Maintenance and Senior dry dog food - manufactured in June and July 2009 - because the products contain mold. More
Tyson Foods to expand pet food operations

Tyson Foods Inc. is renovating a plant in Independence, Iowa with plans to expand its pet food operation by early 2010. The company will spend $6.6 million in renovations and equipment in the next couple of months and employ about 60 when the plant reopens, the company said. More
