FDA issues alert on pet insulin product

Veterinarians and pet owners are being warned to closely monitor dogs and cats receiving Vetsulin because the product may have varying amounts of crystalline zinc insulin in the formulation, according to an alert sent out Monday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. Vetsulin, which is manufactured by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, is used to treat diabetes in animals. MORE


PetSmart recalls Dentley's Beef Hooves

PetSmart has issued a voluntary recall of two varieties of Dentley's Beef Hooves after learning of salmonella contamination from its manufacturer. The products being recalled are Bulk Cattle Hoof, UPC# 73725703323, and 10-Pack Beef Hooves, 73725736055, bought between Oct. 2 and Nov. 3 of this year. There have been no confirmed cases of pets or humans becoming sick because of the product. More
New Orleans mandatory dog spay/neuter ordinance scrapped

New Orleans City Council member Cynthia Hedge-Morrell withdrew her mandatory spay/neuter and breeding restrictions proposal on late Nov. 4, a day before it was to be voted on by the full council. Hedge-Morrell introduced the ordinance in September stating that the aim was to encourage pet owners to be responsible as well as help fund animal control operations. More

An Iowa cat has become the first of its species to come down with a confirmed case of H1N1 flu, officials said Wednesday. The 13-year-old cat was brought to Iowa State University's veterinary college, where tests confirmed that it had the new flu virus, the state health department said. More

If proposed pet policy changes are approved for Maryland state parks, people would be able to take their dogs to more campgrounds and dogs could take a dip at Greenbrier Lake during the off-season. The Maryland Park Service has received a lot of requests for greater pet access at state parks, including campers who want to be able to bring their pets along, Deputy Superintendent Chris Bushman said.
