"The biggest thing the pet industry can do is recognize the need for more senior-specific products for dogs," said Cary Zimmerman, owner and founder of Denver-based Blue Dog Designs.

Purina at the forefront of pet food marketing trends

The recent launch of Just Right dog food by Purina is a bold step in pet food marketing. This launch of a customizable or build-to-order product, is a crossover from the important consumer trend, "made for me." Evidence of this trend in the consumer world are increasingly widespread. It perhaps started with Dell, then flourished with Starbucks and continues with brands like NikeID, M&M's and recently Ugg boots. At the Just Right website, consumers go through a series of questions to determine the right food for their dogs.
