World Pet Association elects new officers at 60th annual meeting

The World Pet Association, the oldest nonprofit organization in the pet industry, hosted its 60th annual election meeting in September during which the organization named five officers to its board of members. The meeting was hosted during SuperZoo, the national show for pet retailers. WPA's re-elected officers include: president Mike Lasky of Schiaffino, Lasky & Associates; 1st vice chair Ruth Jeffers of Jeffers; 2nd vice chair Michael Twain of Amazing Pet Products; chief financial officer Lew Sutton of Pet-Ag, Inc.; and secretary Jim Boschee of Chuck Latham Associates. The World Pet Association, the oldest nonprofit organization within the industry promoting responsible growth and development of the companion pet and related products and services, announces the hire of Judy Breton as its Director of Grooming and Special Services. In her new position, Breton will manage all grooming services, seminars and contests. Breton comes to WPA from Tomlyn Products, where she served as Regional Manager and National Grooming Specialist. Retail sales in US increase by most in seven months

Retail sales in the U.S. climbed in October by the most in seven months, a sign consumers may play a bigger role in the recovery. Purchases rose 1.2 percent, exceeding the highest forecast among economists surveyed by Bloomberg News, after a 0.7 percent September increase that was larger than previously estimated, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. The median estimate of 74 economists projected a 0.7 percent advance. More

Bill planned to repeal small-firm reporting requirement

A top Senate Democrat said Friday he plans to introduce legislation seeking to repeal an unpopular small-business tax-reporting requirement that was introduced to help pay for the health care law. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont, said he was acting in response to the concerns of small-business owners who have complained the requirement was a costly burden that served little or no purpose. "I have heard small businesses loud and clear and I am responding to their concerns," Mr. Baucus said. The measure was originally devised by the Bush administration, but it was Mr. Baucus that inserted it into the health-care bill as a means to partially pay for that legislation's cost. More

Reading, Pa. city council rejects pet limit law

The City Council of Reading, Pa. has voted against an ordinance to amend the city's animal control laws to limit the number of dogs and cats a person may own. The City Council introduced the proposed ordinance at its Oct. 25 meeting and voted it down 5 to 1 at the Council's Nov. 8 meeting. More

Canadian Health Agency warns of possible E. coli contamination in pet food

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Public Health Agency of Canada are warning the public not to use beef pet food sold last month at two locations in Canada's British Columbia province because it may contain E. coli. The affected product was made by Surrey Meat Packers of Cloverdale, British Columbia. It was sold in 500-gram blocks assembled into 10-unit and 50-unit packages from Oct. 8 to Oct. 23 on location at Surrey Meat Packers, 6050-176th St., Cloverdale and at Jolly Meats and Fine Foods, 111 Charles St., North Vancouver, B.C. Putney launches generic ketamine, other products in pipeline

Putney Inc. of Portland, Maine, reported today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center of Veterinary Medicine has approved its generic ketamine hydrochloride for injection. Additional launches of generic pet medications are to follow, including analgesics, anti-infectives, anesthetics, sedatives, dermatologicals and parasiticides, according to Anthony Lucas, BVMS, Ph.D., senior director of product development. The Department of Defense has re-launched its Military Spouse Career Advancement Program, meaning that military spouses can again enroll in courses offered by Animal Behavior College. The MyCAA program, which was launched in August 2009, had been suspended by the department earlier this year for revamping. More
