H1N1 now transmittable to pets says WHO

With communities already on red alert for signs of spreading H1N1, the news that animals are now also at risk gives the pandemic a new twist. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been quick to respond, making statements to caution farm workers and pet owners of the new changes. A spokesperson for the WHO spoke out, saying this shows how virulent the virus has proven to be. And the changing virus is on the move. More




APPA Pulls Funding from PIJAC

Beginning in 2010, the American Pet Product Association will no longer provide funding to the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council. In a letter dated Nov. 12, APPA board chairman Michael Farmer said the board had been concerned with PIJAC's sustainability and leadership for the past several years and, in June, unanimously decided to pull its funding. More

Judge rules dog can attend school with autistic child

A first-grader in central Illinois gets to keep his autism helper dog in school, a Douglas County judge ruled Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. Judge Chris Freese sided with the family of Kaleb Drew, who argued that the boy's yellow Labrador retriever is a service animal allowed in schools under Illinois law. More


National Dog Show this weekend

Thousands of dogs will take to the show rings this weekend in two all-breed, benched dog shows as the the Kennel Club of Philadelphia hosts the National Dog Show Presented by Purina, to be broadcast Thanksgiving on NBC. John O'Hurley, of "Family Feud," "Seinfeld" and "Dancing with the Stars" fame, hosts the Saturday show, which will be televised at noon on Thanksgiving. More


PawsPlus acquires Animal Health Associates

PawsPlus Inc., the holding company for Vetco Hospitals Inc., has acquired Animal Health Associates Inc. in an all-stock transaction. Both companies are based in Sarasota, Fla. Vetco Hospitals and Animal Health operate pet vaccination clinics in pet stores. With the acquisition, PawsPlus will offer almost 700 vaccination clinics in eight states. Five full-service Vetco Hospitals are in Southern California. More


Permits now needed for exotic pets in Canada

If you have an exotic pet such as a bat-eared fox, grey-bellied night monkey or side-stripped jackal, you may want to take note: The permit phase for British Columbia's new regulations governing exotic animals is now underway. The Controlled Alien Species Regulation, enacted in March, requires the owners of more than 1,200 species of mammals, reptiles and birds not native to the province to obtain a permit by April 1, 2010. More

PetSmart is extending a voluntary recall on beef hoof products to include a total of 14 products. These items were manufactured by Pet Carousel, Inc. in Sanger, Calif., and include beef hoof chews as well as certain rope toys with hoof or bone components. The date range for purchasing affected products has been expanded to include products purchased from Sept. 1, 2009 to Nov. 6, 2009. More
