Jacksonville, Fla. officials postpone hearing on pet ordinance

City officials in Jacksonville, Fla., have once again postponed a hearing on a measure that seeks to amend regulations governing the pet trade. The city council has rescheduled the hearing for Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010. Currently, animal dealers are required by law to obtain a permit from the city. While that wouldn't change under this proposed ordinance, animal dealers would be limited in the number of animals they may sell. More

The Trade Show Executive Dashboard of Monthly Trade Show Metrics for September showed overall increases in all three categories for the second month in a row. Nine of the 21 shows surveyed for the Dashboard reported increases or no change in all three categories: attendance, number of exhibitors and net square feet of exhibit space. A statewide sweep of pet stores is under way this month to make certain the stores are complying with laws designed to protect consumers. Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson said officials will be looking for specific things. For example, officials will be determining whether dogs and cats sold by a store are at least 8 weeks old. More

Dechra grows vet pharmaceutical business with UK acquisition

Dechra Pharmaceuticals PLC has reported that it has acquired Genitrix Ltd., a U.K.-based veterinary pharmaceuticals company, for about $8.4 million. An additional $1.2 million will be payable upon achievement of specific milestones, according to Dechra Pharmaceuticals, also based in the United Kingdom. More

Del Monte's pet food division posts gains

Del Monte Foods Co., which recently agreed to a $4 billion buyout, reported second quarter gains for its pet product division, while overall sales declined and overall profits rose. For the pet division, Del Monte reported operating income of $92.7 million on net sales of $433.2 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2011 ended Oct. 31, compared to operating income of $84.8 million on net sales of $422.1 million.
