New criminal law guidelines snake through North Carolina

Owners of reptilian pets, including crocodiles, venomous snakes and boa constrictors, face new criminal law repercussions and potentially incarceration in the state of North Carolina should their pets ever escape containment and threaten to cause harm. Private owners will now be required to store or transport venomous reptiles, large constricting snakes, and non-native crocodilians in escape-proof and bite-proof enclosures with a working lock. Thiamine deficient cat food recall notice updated

Diamond Pet Foods of Meta, Mo., recently reported that 21 cases of thiamine deficiency in cats have been confirmed since the company's September voluntary recall of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball products. The cases have been confined to the New York and Pennsylvania areas and no other reports have been received since Oct. 19, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. More

Wisconsin passes puppy mill bill

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle on Tuesday signed a bill to regulate large-scale dog breeding facilities - a measure he hopes will bring an end to the state's reputation as a magnet for puppy mills. "Frankly, when it comes to regulating dog breeders, we have fallen short of many other states – until today," Doyle said. "We can't allow these bad actors to continue these practices here in Wisconsin." More

Canada's biggest pet product retailer, Pet Valu, has been acquired by affiliates of Roark Capital Group, an Atlanta-based private equity firm. As a result of the transaction, which is valued at approximately $144 million, Pet Valu goes from a publicly traded to a private company. More
