Pampered pooches: Couple opens dog spa in Duncanville, Ala., to serve man's best friend

Martina Rigney's love for dogs got her into pet grooming about five years ago. Now she and her husband, Tom, have taken their penchant for pampering pooches a step further. They opened a new business in Duncanville, Ala., Furry Friends Pet Resort & Day Spa, which Martina Rigney describes as a spa for dogs.

Bissell Pet Foundation donates $600,000 to animal charities in 2013

The Bissell Pet Foundation, affiliated and partly funded by Bissell Homecare Inc. of Grand Rapids, Mich., reveals that it has given more than $635,000 to 90 U.S. animal welfare groups this year. Since the Bissell Pet Foundation was founded in December 2011 by Cathy Bissell, director of corporate affairs for Bissell Homecare, it has contributed more than $1.1 million to animal shelters and rescues in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Hospice care offered to ill pets, grieving owners

As Mike Kelley stroked his cat Andy for the last time, he recalled how the feline would eat yogurt every morning and meet him at the door every night. Kelley told stories about his beloved pet before Dr. Mary Gardner gave the 10-year-old cat a shot and he went to sleep for the last time. After Andy developed liver disease, Kelley sought the support of the hospice veterinarian, who came to his home, listened to him talk about his cat and eventually allowed Andy to die with dignity. It's in line with a continuing trend of animal lovers committing increasing time and expense to pet care.
