In Memoriam: L. Harold Levinson

With sadness the AAA-CPA would like to inform members of the passing of Professor L. Harold Levinson, one of two Honorary Past Presidents of the AAA-CPA and a 1999 recipient of the Louis Goldberg award. He died on Jan. 27 of complications from Parkinson's Disease. He will be buried in Nashville, Tenn., alongside his late wife. Harold was a Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University in Nashville for 26 years and enjoyed Emeritus status for more than a decade thereafter. He previously had taught at the University of Florida. Harold moved to the DC area a decade ago following the death of his wife. He attended Capital Area Chapter meetings for several years for so long as he was able. Several members have inquired on contributions in his memory. The Attorney-CPA Foundation will gladly accept gifts in his honor and their official policy is as follows: Memorial Funds are generally funds established through friends & fellow members of AAA-CPA in honor of deceased members. Arkansas Senate looks at tax cuts on groceries, cars

The Arkansas Senate is considering cutting Arkansas' taxes on groceries and used cars, a week after the House approved three tax cuts that Gov. Mike Beebe says the state can't afford. The Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee is expected to vote on a half-cent cut in the sales tax on groceries advocated by Beebe. More

West Virginia tobacco tax hike wins Senate panel approval

West Virginia would nearly triple its cigarette tax and hike its other levy on tobacco to fund health care needs under a measure that cleared a Senate committee hurdle. The Senate Finance Committee must now review the legislation amended and advanced by the chamber's Health and Human Resources Committee on a non-unanimous voice vote. More

Intuit expects condensed tax season, people filing later

Growth in its online and small-business products powered fiscal second-quarter revenue higher for Intuit Inc. despite a delay in electronic filings for its core tax software business, the company reported. Revenue for the small business group increased 15 percent in the quarter ending in January, with the strongest growth for the company's Quick Books for enterprises and online. More
