Sen. Hatch calls for spending cuts, tax code overhaul
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The top Republican on the U.S. Senate Finance Committee called for cutting government spending and vowed that the current Congress would overhaul the U.S. tax system, highlighting the main elements of a brewing debate over the most basic functions of federal government. "Spending is too high; it is driving systematic deficits and debt," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said at an event organized by the American Action Forum, a recently established right-of-center group. "It is encouraging the left to promote ever-higher taxes," he said. More

Geithner says tax overhaul must address businesses filing as individuals
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Obama administration is seeking to widen the scope of its proposal to overhaul the corporate tax code, urging Congress to also change rules that allow some businesses to take advantage of tax laws governing individuals. U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the Senate Finance Committee Feb. 15 that Congress should "revisit" long-standing rules that give businesses a choice of paying taxes as a corporation or through a structure such as a partnership through which they can report business income on individual tax returns. Tax-overhaul debate to include income from pass-through entities
NASDAQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A key aspect of the debate to overhaul the U.S. tax code must be how the government treats income earned by businesses whose owners file taxes as individuals rather than as corporate entities, a top Treasury official said. More

IRS loosens triggers on tax liens, but avoiding them is best
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A federal tax lien is like those deeply unpopular Denver boots local parking authorities affix to vehicles owned by drivers who haven't paid their parking tickets. The message is clear: Pay up, cowboy, or you're not going anywhere. More

The US gift-tax gift: A $5 million exclusion
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The big news for estate planners in the U.S. tax legislation passed last year isn't the $5 million estate-tax exemption -- though that number is far higher than expected -- it's the $5 million lifetime gift-tax exclusion. That is so much higher than it has been historically, and provides so many opportunities for estate planning for the ultra-rich, that planners for high-net-worth clients are salivating. More

Government labor unions vs. the taxpayer
Sunshine News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The drama unfolding in Wisconsin is a collision between the generous salary and pension benefits of government employees and the ability of the average taxpayer to afford them. The unions parade thousands of teachers, police and firemen who try to portray this battle as rich versus poor. More

Elder care cuts may prove costly
The Monterey County Herald    Share    Share
on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The grooves in Jose Lanz's gold college ring have been worn smooth by time, just as age and illness have eroded the 71-year-old Cuban's mind and body. Lanz is one of about 37,000 frail or disabled seniors on Medi-Cal who use adult day health care centers every month, on average. Without funding, the centers are expected to close, meaning that families would have to shoulder the burden of caring for their sick alone or put them in a nursing home, where their care would be more expensive for California. Canadians can't escape US estate taxes
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Canadians can't escape the U.S. taxman's reach -- even in death. Even if you aren't a U.S. citizen or resident and you don't own U.S. real estate, you might still have to pay U.S. estate tax if you die owning U.S. assets. More
