South Jersey Working Together Conference

This year's South Jersey Working Together Conference will include the normal updates on examination and collection procedures, an update on the expanded privacy rules and a discussion on the growing identity theft problems and the Internal Revenue Service's procedures to address it. In addition, the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey will offer a brief update on respective changes in their policies and procedures. US GOP tax lawmaker urges tighter US partnership rules
The top Republican tax writer in the U.S. House of Representatives proposed shaking up taxation of privately held businesses in ways that would tighten rules on partnerships, such as private equity and hedge funds. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp laid out two options — one incremental; one more drastic — to revamp noncorporate business taxation, with the aim of reducing tax gaming and simplifying filing for hundreds of thousands of businesses.

Senate begins bipartisan meetings on tax reform

The parties may be at war over the federal budget, but Republicans and Democrats are locking arms over taxes: Key committees in the House and now the Senate have launched a bipartisan campaign to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive rewrite of the tax code. The full membership of the tax-writing Senate Finance Committee will hold the first of more than a dozen private meetings to review options for overhauling the code, with the hope of producing legislation later this year.

H&R Block error causing lengthy tax refund delays for customers

Some taxpayers splurge on big-screen televisions or pay off their credit cards with their tax refund, while others, like Brandon Frank, count on it to pay rent. The 25-year-old former construction worker from Michigan and father of three may have to wait as long as six weeks before he sees his refund, because of a filing error by H&R Block.

Federal workers owe $3.5 billion in back taxes
The Associated Press via U.S. News & World Report
The number of federal workers and retirees who owed delinquent income taxes jumped by nearly 12 percent in 2011, the Internal Revenue Service said. Nearly 312,000 federal workers and retirees owed more than $3.5 billion in back taxes as of Sept. 30, 2011, the agency said.

IRS has $917 million in unclaimed 2009 tax refunds
Taxpayers who haven't filed 2009 tax returns are missing out on federal tax refunds totaling $917 million, the Internal Revenue Service announced. About 984,400 taxpayers haven't submitted returns for 2009, the agency said. Some people may not have filed because their income was low enough that they weren't required to, but they could still qualify for refunds if taxes were withheld from their paychecks.

Business executives want tax reform separate from entitlement reform

A majority of business leaders believe tax reform should be separated from reforms to government entitlement programs and deficit reduction, according to a new poll. The survey, by KPMG's Tax Governance Institute, found that just over half (52 percent) of the respondents to the survey said they thought tax reform should be separable from deficit reduction and reforms to entitlement programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, while 27 percent felt it shouldn't and 18 percent weren't sure.
