Fewer people expect tax refunds this year
VideoBriefFewer Americans are expecting the financial boost of a tax refund this year. In an American Express survey of roughly 1,500 adults, 59 percent of respondents said they expect a refund check this year, down from 64 percent last year.

Tax proposal could help small businesses, economy

A notable piece of small business news on Capitol Hill concerns a tax proposal that could lift some of the uncertainty entrepreneurs complain about. Under a proposal announced by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., a popular tax deduction for equipment purchases would become permanent and be set at $250,000, aside from annual inflation adjustments.

Senate panel eyes IRS tax reform options
A list of tentative tax reform options was floated in the Senate, including repealing the alternative minimum tax and requiring insurers to report more financial data, along with a range of modest administrative improvements. Focused largely on making the Internal Revenue Service and the tax system generally more efficient, the nine-page list was being circulated among lobbyists and members of the tax-writing Senate Finance Committee.

US losing ground from higher corporate tax rate

The U.S. economy will be between 1.5 and 2.6 percent smaller over the long-term because other nations' corporate tax rates are considerably more competitive, according to a new study by Ernst & Young and the RATE Coalition, a group lobbying for lower corporate tax rates. The study measured the effect of changes in corporate income tax systems, including lower corporate income tax rates in other countries, on the U.S. economy.

New study using IRS tax data shows rich are staying richer, poor poorer
A groundbreaking new study concludes that the rich became permanently richer and the poor permanently poorer from 1987-2009. Five economists, including one from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and two from the Federal Reserve, used data from nearly 34,000 working age households' 1040s, W-2s and Social Security records to tease out how much of the discussed rise in income inequality in the U.S. might simply reflect more volatility in earnings.
