House passes Paul Ryan budget, consolidating tax brackets
Accounting Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The House has passed a Republican-sponsored budget alternative to President Barack Obama's fiscal 2013 budget, mostly based on the plan put forward by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., for creating only two tax brackets of just 10 and 25 percent. Ryan introduced his budget plan recently, although it largely hewed toward the plan he put forward last year. The House passed the bill in a 228-191 vote, mostly along party lines. More

Senate blocks effort to end to oil industry tax breaks
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Senate blocked an effort to end billions of dollars in tax breaks for the oil industry, brushing aside President Barack Obama's argument that the five big oil companies were doing "just fine" while consumers were struggling with painfully high gasoline prices. The measure to kill the industry tax preferences failed on a 51-47 procedural vote. It needed 60 votes to overcome a Republican-led filibuster that was supported by some Democrats from oil-rich states. More

The government is cracking down on a scheme that they say has already likely bilked the IRS of billions of dollars, the Wall Street Journal reports. The perpetrators of the scam, which has been going on for at least five years, take the social security numbers of Puerto Ricans — who don't have to pay federal income taxes — and use them to file fake tax returns. It's part of the total burden," he says. More

ABC News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBriefCongress crossed one item off its tax to-do list recently after passing an extension to the highway excise taxes, which funds transportation projects and without which all federal highway projects would have come to a screeching halt. One down, 47 more to go. If Congress does not act by the end of the year, nearly 50 items in the tax code will expire, sparking tax hikes for nearly every income-earner in America. More
