Prospects for California tax reform

Offshore tax shelters disclosed in leaked documents

Millions of leaked documents show a growing abuse of tax shelters by the rich around the world in an effort to avoid taxes, according to a recent report. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists says 90 journalists from 47 countries have used high-tech data crunching to wade through 2.5 million documents from the last 30 years. It said that the amount of data leaked is 160 times greater than the leak of U.S. Department of State documents by Wikileaks in 2010.

Obama budget would cut entitlements in exchange for tax increases

Tax refunds will be used on day-to-day expenses

More than a third of U.S. adults expect to spend their tax refunds this year on meeting everyday expenses, according to a new survey by the American Institute of CPAs, as the expiration of the payroll tax cut takes a bite out of workers' take-home pay. The telephone survey, conducted among 1,011 U.S. adults between March 14 and March 17, found that 43 percent of those who expect to receive a refund consider it more important to their financial well-being this year than in years past.

IRS top-earner audit team picks off 1 in 8
The Internal Revenue Service has learned the Willie Sutton principle: When it comes to revenues, go to where the money is. New data from the IRS shows that tax filers with taxable incomes of $1 million or more were audited nearly 12 times more often than the population as a whole.
