President Barack Obama's Democrats traded shots with Republicans recently about how best to avoid a year-end fiscal cliff, as the administration insisted on the need to let tax cuts for wealthier Americans expire as scheduled on Jan. 1. The prospect of higher taxes and automatic spending cuts that kick in next year have spurred calls for Obama to temporarily extend all of the Bush-era tax breaks to coax Republicans into a sweeping debt deal, but the White House stood firm. A bipartisan pair of House lawmakers is urging their colleagues to extend a tax credit they argue has boosted job growth in economically distressed areas. Tax writers Reps. Jim Gerlach, R-Pa., and Richard Neal, D-Mass., the ranking member at the Ways and Means Committee on taxes, are ramping up their call for an extension of the New Markets Tax Credit through 2016 following a tepid May jobs report. The Internal Revenue Service may have to change its name to the International Revenue Service when it starts collecting tax revenue from foreign banks once the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act. The controversial law, which was included as part of the HIRE Act of 2010, requires foreign financial institutions to report on the holdings of U.S. citizens and entities to the IRS or face stiff penalties. Provisions of the law begin to take effect next year, but the regulations proposed in February have yet to be finalized. More

SEC sees 30 to 32 confidential filings since JOBS Act

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has seen 30 to 32 companies file confidentially since the JOBS Act was passed in late March, SEC attorney Jennifer Zepralka said. The confidential filing rules allow companies with less than $1 billion in annual revenue to submit registration paperwork for initial public offerings in private. The paperwork isn't seen by outsiders until 21 days before the company's roadshow, used to market initial public offering shares to investors. More

Baucus calls for more revenue from tax code rewrite

The U.S. should raise more money to help reduce the federal budget deficit through an overhaul of the tax code, said Sen. Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. Jobs, innovation, competitiveness and opportunity should be four principles that govern the tax code, he said in a speech at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C. "Our tax code is growing out of control," said Baucus, 70, a Montana Democrat. "It's time we had a tax code for the 21st century." More

Tax scam: IRS warns of tax scam targeting military members

Tax scammers now are targeting the military. The IRS warns that scammers are emailing current and former military members in an attempt to steal their identities. The scammers pose as Defense Department representatives and use a .mil email address, according to the IRS. They claim that disability compensation recipients are eligible for extra money and ask their targets to send them government documents with personal and financial information to an address in Florida.
