Domenick R. Tax authorities have postponed implementation of new rules to force banks and financial institutions to disclose more information about U.S. clients' offshore accounts. The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act has been a source of anxiety for institutions that must comply with it or face penalties, including possible exclusion from U.S. markets. More

Small business OK with top tax rate rising

If you strip away the campaign rhetoric, you'll find that small business owners favor allowing the tax rate cuts for the wealthiest taxpayers to expire to help pay down the U.S. debt. A poll indicated the majority of small business owners think raising taxes on the top 2 percent of taxpayers is the right thing to do, and government can play a role in helping small businesses thrive. Report: Fiscal cliff already hampering US economy

The fiscal cliff is still two months off, but the scheduled blast of tax hikes and spending cuts is already reverberating through the U.S. economy, hampering growth and, according to a new study, wiping out nearly 1 million jobs this year alone. The report predicts that the economic damage would deepen considerably if Congress fails to avert the cliff, destroying nearly 6 million jobs through 2014 and sending the unemployment rate soaring to near 12 percent. States with the highest and lowest taxes

During the 2010 tax season, Americans paid 9.9 percent of their income on state and local taxes. This number, according to a report by The Tax Foundation, is up from 9.3 percent in 2000, but is basically unchanged from 2009. Per-capita income in the U.S. fell from $42,539 in 2009 to $41,146 in 2010, while taxes fell slightly, from $4,160 in 2009 to $4,112 in 2010. More

Group of major CEOs urges tax hikes, spending cuts

CEOs from more than 80 major U.S. companies are pressing Congress to reduce the federal deficit by raising taxes and cutting spending. The deficit and how to tame it has become a key theme in the presidential campaign. They warned in a statement that the uncertainty spawned by the deficit, which has topped $1 trillion for four consecutive years, is dampening businesses' hiring and investment and stifling the fragile economic recovery.
