Payroll tax exposes rift in House Republican caucus

Deep rifts among House Republicans became evident as rank-and-file members of the caucus told their leaders that they did not want to extend the cut in Social Security payroll taxes for another year, as demanded by President Obama. Speaker John A. Boehner has told Republicans they would run political risks and could be accused of allowing a tax increase if they block the continuation of payroll tax relief. More

IRS stuck with $153.3 million in undelivered tax refunds

The Internal Revenue Service said that it has $153.3 million in undelivered tax refund checks waiting to be sent to 99,123 taxpayers across the country. In what has turned into an annual ritual for the service, the IRS said it has a fortune waiting in its coffers that could not be delivered to taxpayers because of mailing address errors. Taxpayers can still claim their refunds, though, and can probably use a little help from their accountants. More

Tax respite in the works for Americans living in Canada

Relief is in sight for U.S. citizens living in Canada who have been caught up in fear of massive penalties for failure to file tax returns and provide bank account information. The United States Internal Revenue Service is set to ease up in its campaign to catch tax cheats hiding money in offshore accounts, according to the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa. More

Fewer than 3,300 estates will owe federal estate tax this year, the smallest number in more than 75 years (other than 2010 when the tax disappeared for the year). But, paradoxically, even as Congress shrinks the number of taxable estates, the law also encourages many more estates to file returns — even if they owe no tax. More

SEC examines Marlins stadium deal

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has opened an investigation into the public financing deal behind the Miami Marlins' new ballpark. SEC officials delivered letters to the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County, requesting financial records, meeting minutes and communications with the team and officials from Major League Baseball, according to a person familiar with the matter. Miami and county officials have until Jan. 6 to deliver the documents. More
