Painless 'plasma jets' instead of dental drill?
BusinessWeek    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Plasma jets could offer a painless alternative to dentists' drills, say German researchers. They found that firing low temperature plasma beams at dentin — the fibrous tooth structure beneath the enamel coating — reduced the amount of dental bacteria by up to 10,000-fold. The results suggest that plasma jets could be used to remove infected tissue in tooth cavities, a procedure that currently requires a drill. More

Can a clean mouth prevent a heart infection?
The Winfield Daily Courier    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dental disease and poor oral hygiene are among the risks for infective endocarditis, a potentially serious infection of the heart's lining or valves. Maintaining good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups and cleaning, reduces this risk. Poor oral hygiene is typically characterized by a high concentration of microorganisms. Some of these organisms can enter the bloodstream and travel to the heart, especially when dental disease provides greater access to the bloodstream. More

Study finds face masks and hand hygiene can help limit influenza's spread
Infection Control Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ordinary face masks and hand hygiene can effectively reduce the transmission of influenza-like illness during flu season. The finding comes from a new study, now available online, published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. In an influenza pandemic, vaccination may not be initially available, and antiviral prescribing may be limited, which is why scientists need to understand how effective other measures are in preventing influenza. Study: Parents should use toothpastes that contain fluoride with a minimum concentration of 1,000 parts per million
Science Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Parents should use toothpastes that contain fluoride with a minimum concentration of 1,000 parts per million to prevent tooth decay in their children, says a new report. Preventing tooth decay can help reduce the need for extensive and costly dental treatments, including extractions. Researchers suggest that parents concerned about the risk of fluorosis — the discolouration or mottling of the teeth caused by excessive fluoride ingestion — should consult their dentist to discuss the benefits and risks. Poor oral hygiene among 19-year-olds

Swedish 19-year-olds need to improve their oral hygiene habits. Seven out of eight adolescents have unacceptable oral hygiene, which increases the risk of future dental problems. The study examined 500 randomly selected adolescents from Västra Götaland. "On average, these adolescents had plaque on half of all tooth surfaces, which is certainly too much. Seven out of eight adolescents had more plaque than is currently deemed acceptable," explains doctoral student Jessica Skoog Ericsson. More
