Do you remember your dental assisting school experience?
By Yvonne Evans, RDA, BS
As a displaced survivor of Hurricane Katrina, I like many others had been thrown in a situation where our lives as we knew it had been destroyed. I had invested 30 years to teaching, 25 of those years were with special needs children. I worked with a multidisciplinary team consisting of a school psychologist, educational diagnostician, speech therapist, social worker, physical therapist and occupational therapist. My job as an adapted physical education evaluator was to evaluate and recommend placement in the least restrictive environment. That was my day job. Most teachers had second and sometimes third jobs outside of teaching to make ends meet. At one of my regular dental appointments, my dentist's receptionist had to leave because of illness and he did not have anyone to answer the phones and greet his patients. I volunteered to help him out and was asked if I could continue after school.

The pediatric dentist ignores cavities!
DentistryIQ
QUESTION: I have worked in a pediatric dental office for almost two years, and the dentist constantly misses cavities. He waits until they are visible to both the parents and me, and they have shown up on X-rays a year prior to diagnosis. Many times the teeth become infected and need a pulpotomy. I'm not sure if he doesn't see them or he doesn’t care to treat the cavities. The hygienist and I have been keeping a record of these patients. I would like to report the dentist but I'm not quite sure what to do. And let me add that these cavities are extremely visible in both the mouth and on X-rays. We need some advice.

Blog or post about work and you're fired!
DentistryIQ
There has been a significant shift in the federal employment law climate that requires all dentists to reevaluate their employee policies, specifically with respect to how you manage or restrict communications among employees. In the last year, the National Labor Relations Act and its governing board has heightened its regulating activity and has been targeting employers for any violations of an employee's "protected concerted activity" or Section 7 rights.

Tooth Fairy spending up 23 percent over last year
Inside Dental Assisting
Tooth Fairy spending skyrocketed in 2013 and shows no signs of slowing down. Visa's annual survey shows that American children are receiving an average of $3.70 per lost tooth this year, which is a dramatic increase of 23 percent over the $3 per tooth left in 2012 and 42 percent over the $2.60 left in 2011. Based on this rate of return, a child would net a substantive $74 for a full set of 20 baby teeth.

Patients who have dental extractions before cardiac surgery are still at risk for poor outcomes
Medical News Today
To pull or not to pull? That is a common question when patients have the potentially dangerous combination of abscessed or infected teeth and the need for heart surgery. In such cases, problem teeth often are removed before surgery, to reduce the risk of infections including endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart that can prove deadly. But Mayo Clinic research suggests it may not be as simple as pulling teeth: The study found that roughly 1 in 10 heart surgery patients who had troublesome teeth extracted before surgery died or had adverse outcomes such as a stroke or kidney failure.
