Texas 1st Student Chapter of the ADAA has been approved … and congratulations are in order! Concorde Career Institute in Arlington, Texas, has successfully completed all paperwork and elected their officers of their SADAA Chapter. Their proud sponsor is Nadia Dorise. This student chapter will provide a direct communication channel between ADAA and their students so that their opinions are heard on the national level. The purpose of this chapter is to provide students with leadership development, mentoring and support during their time in school, and a direct link to their local organization; Fort Worth District Dental Assistants Society.

ADAA members who need to take a credentialing exam, apply for a credential certificate or license or any other expense to become credentialed in the state or take the national certification exam, can apply with the attached application to receive a $500 scholarship to be used toward the credentialing process. Biological tooth replacement is a step closer

Scientists have developed a new method of replacing missing teeth with a bioengineered material generated from a person's own gum cells. Current implant-based methods of whole tooth replacement fail to reproduce a natural root structure and as a consequence of the friction from eating and other jaw movement, loss of jaw bone can occur around the implant.

Smoking is associated with tooth loss. However, smoking’s relationship to the specific reason for tooth loss in postmenopausal women is unknown. … After adjusting for age, education, income, body mass index, history of diabetes diagnosis, calcium supplement use and dental visit frequency, the authors found that heavy smokers were significantly more likely to report having experienced tooth loss compared with never smokers.

Wine after whitening nullifies impact

Congress approves dental responder legislation
American Dental Association
Dental responder legislation was on its way to the White House for expected presidential signature and enactment after bipartisan and final approval by the 113th Congress March 4. The Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Reauthorization Act of 2013 makes dental entities eligible for carrying out certain educational and training activities pertaining to public health emergencies. States, at their option, may include dentists and dental facilities, including dental schools, in their public health emergency plans without mandating participation by dentists.

Living with Parkinson's and looking for relief

Carla Gantz, RDH, describes how her Parkinson's disease diagnosis effected her role role as a dental hygienist. Gantz says in part: "The doctor's voice quit its background droning as I slowly crossed back to existence and paid attention to him. He was saying that my PD is unilateral, located only on my right side, hand, arm, and shoulder, which placed me in stage 1 PD. My first medication was Requip, which was fantastic for my tremor, but wreaked havoc with my stomach. So I started taking carbidopa/levodopa 25/100 three times a day."
