Dental x-rays linked to common brain tumor
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new study suggests people who had certain kinds of dental X-rays in the past may be at an increased risk for meningioma, the most commonly diagnosed brain tumor in the U.S. The findings cannot prove that radiation from the imaging caused the tumors, and the results are based on people who were likely exposed to higher levels of radiation during dental X-rays than most are today. An association found between childhood obesity and tooth eruption
Dental Health Imaging Hub    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a study published in Obesity, the authors investigated the possible association between childhood obesity and tooth eruption. As they noted, "obesity is a growth-promoting process as evidenced by its effect on the timing of puberty. Although studies are limited, obesity has been shown to affect the timing of tooth eruption. Both the timing and sequence of tooth eruption are important to overall oral health." More

Teeth whitening considerations
Inside Dental Assisting    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tooth whitening has been used for more than 150 years to improve the appearance of teeth. While the safety and efficacy of these old procedures were questionable, they were somewhat successful. They were also time consuming and involved the use of potentially dangerous chemicals. These protocols were primarily used for nonvital teeth. Almost a century ago, a pyrozone (ether peroxide) mouthwash proved effective in reducing caries and whitening teeth. More

Perio and pregnancy
Dental Economics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It is readily apparent from a review of available research that the jury is still out about the relationship between periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy events, specifically preterm low-birth-weight babies. Epidemiological and interventional studies have shown inconsistent results. Many of these studies were well designed by credible, reputable authors and published in highly respected peer-reviewed journals. As clinicians, we always turn to research for guidance regarding our approach to disease and treatment planning. When inconsistent results are reported, we need to wait until a consensus is achieved before changing our dialogue and the manner in which we care for our patients. More

Your teeth may be poisoning fish you eat
Dentistry IQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dental mercury fillings pollute the environment, contaminate fish, and are far more costly for taxpayers than the alternative tooth-colored material, according to a new study released today by a broad coalition of health, consumer, and environmental groups. "The report's findings confirm that amalgam is not the least expensive when the so-called 'external costs' are factored in," said Michael Bender, director of the Mercury Policy Project. "And use is still prevalent. Using data from the American Dental Association, the report found that 32 tons of dental mercury is used annually in the U.S., twice that of current estimates." More

The Internet is cluttered with websites lacking original content. In fact, it is still a common practice to load websites with stock library articles. Many businesses and firms hire expensive design teams and programmers to build beautiful looking websites. Despite the hefty price tag and attractive appearance, the pages are often filled with dry, irrelevant content that can be found on any competitor's website. More

'Lab on a chip' could detect oral cancer in minutes
DrBicuspid    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers from the University of Sheffield and Rice University are developing a new "lab on a chip" technique they say can diagnose oral cancer more quickly and effectively. The device, which is undergoing a clinical trial led by Martin Thornhill, BDS, Ph.D., professor of oral medicine at the University of Sheffield, could be used by a dentist to determine whether a patient has oral cancer or other abnormalities in fewer than 20 minutes, the researchers said in a press release. Ensuring success in porcelain repair
Inside Dentistry    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Because more tooth-colored restorations are being done in ever-stronger ceramics, the ability to repair porcelain and lithium disilicate has become an important skill. These repairs will adhere to the restoration as long as the clinician adheres to the basic principles of adhesive dentistry. If these principles are not followed, the repair will need to be redone every few months, until the dentist gives up or the patient gives up on the dentist. Every clinician should know the limitations of ceramic repairs in order to know when to attempt it, and when to say "no." More

Is a cluttered desk truly the sign of a cluttered mind?
Dentistry IQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many people have heard the saying that a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind. Of course, there is the opposite saying that it is the sure sign of a genius. Walking back into the operatories and the doctor's personal office can often be more intimidating as the piles grow with each step. Even the so-called "paperless" practices use paper at some point and are rarely completely paper-free. With that in mind, how does an office keep the stacks of paper from getting totally out of hand?
