Human Resources questions for dentists: After hours harassment, warning staff of layoffs
DentistryIQ
QUESTION: We periodically host off-site company functions. Often, there is alcohol available for adults. When this is the case, we provide a hotel room to keep everyone safe and we pay for it. At our most recent event, an employee alleged that a male coworker harassed her late in the night, long after the event given by us was over. Do we have to investigate this? Is there a potential for liability even though it was away from work and on a weekend?

Dental office screening identifies diabetes, prediabetes
MedPage Today
Screening for diabetes during a dental office visit is feasible and may represent an effective strategy for identifying millions of Americans who are diabetic or prediabetic but don't know it, researchers said. As many as 30 percent of the 29 million diabetics in the United States have not been diagnosed, and 90 percent of the estimated 86 million Americans with prediabetes are also unaware of their risk, Dr. Saleh Aldasouqi of Michigan State University, East Lansing, said at a briefing from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist's 24th Annual Scientific and Clinical Conference.

How to take better digital intraoral images
Inside Dentistry
Digital intraoral imaging is an essential part of dentistry today. Although digital radiography delivers superior diagnostic advantages compared to film, success relies on a number of factors: proper sensor placement, good contrast, density, sharpness, and resolution. Learning the best way to manipulate those factors can directly affect image quality. Sometimes it's about machine settings, features, and calibration; other times, it's the X-ray angle, viewing conditions, or anatomy.

How to ask for referrals without sounding like a salesperson
Dental Practice Management
A doctor and team have recently embarked on an organic marketing campaign in which they are asking their current patients for referrals. However, many of the team members (and, quite frankly, the doctor) do not feel comfortable asking without sounding desperate or like a salesperson. They are asking for help and also wondering if they are the only ones who are struggling with this daunting task.

Know the numbers of your dental practice
DentistryIQ
Remember when you were a kid and your mom bought you a paint-by-numbers kit? It contained a box with a blank "canvas" that had an outline of a picture lightly stamped on it. Each area in the picture had a corresponding number that referred to a paint color. If you followed the numbers and applied paint to those areas, you ended up with a painting worthy of the family refrigerator. Your practice is much more complex than a paint-by-numbers kit, but if you "follow the numbers" and make decisions correspondingly, you’ll end up with a masterpiece.
