Dental assistants forge military careers
Inside Dental Assisting
Phillip Manning couldn’t swim before he joined the Navy. In his third week of boot camp, he faced the basic swim qualification test. With nothing more than a crash swim course in two shallow pools, he had to jump from a 10-foot platform into the deep end of the pool and then swim 100 meters. "When I was getting up there, I could see other recruits getting close to the edge and backing down," Manning says. "I stood there at the edge, thinking about all of the reasons why I was there and how I had to jump in that water and it would be a tragedy if I didn't." But after he took the plunge, he learned a few things.

OSHA complacent or compliant?
RDH
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was created in 1970 after Congress enacted the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The mission of OSHA is to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for American workers. OSHA sets and enforces standards, provides training, and promotes ongoing improvement in workplace safety and health. Its goal is to help employers protect their workers, and ultimately have fewer work-related injuries, illnesses, or deaths. Safer workplaces provide employers with reduced workers' compensation insurance costs, medical expenses, and lost work time.

SIDS or methemoglobinemia?
RDH
In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about over-the-counter products containing benzocaine. Benzocaine is the main ingredient in OTC gels and liquids that are applied to the gums or mouth to reduce pain caused by teething, canker sores, and irritation of the mouth and gums. It is also sold as lozenges and in spray solutions. Anbesol, Hurricaine, Orajel, Baby Orajel, and Orabase are some of the brand names that contain benzocaine. Reports of a rare but serious adverse effect have been associated with the use of teething gels and liquids. Methemoglobinemia is a condition that results in the amount of oxygen being greatly reduced as it is carried through the bloodstream and in severe cases can lead to death.

For the 4th time since 1956, Portland voters reject fluoridation
The Oregonian
Fluoride supporters, it appeared, had everything going for them. Five Portland, Ore., city commissioners had voted to add fluoride to the city water supply. Health advocacy groups, and many of the city's communities of color, lined up behind the cause. And proponents outraised opponents 3-to-1. But none of that was enough. For the fourth time since 1956, Portlanders rejected a plan to fluoridate city water, 60 percent to 40 percent.
