Office conflicts … Think about them

We all work in an office – some big and some small - and it is a fact of life that when people work together, there will be conflict. So whether it's the dental office, the faculty office at a school or a sales office that we dental assistants call home away from home, we need to be prepared for periodic conflicts and how to handle them. As a business assistant, it may even be in your job description to resolve them. In all cases of conflict … and there are too many to enumerate here … conflicting thoughts and assumptions are usually at the core of the conflict. These thoughts and assumptions often get in the way of positive action and cooperation. Clear-cut lines of communication often help to quash conflict before it starts. More

A proposal in Virginia to allow a new category of dental personnel, the dental assistant II, to use high-speed instruments has prompted heated debate among the dental community, with opponents calling it a threat to patient safety. The proposal was put forward by Denice Burnette, CDA, EFDA, the only DAII working in Virginia. It asks that the state permit DAIIs to operate a high-speed rotary instrument in patients' mouths. More

Dental therapists fill a void but dentists question their credentials

Nearly 17 million U.S. children fail to see a dentist every year, according to the Pew Charitable Trust. Now, a new group of dental professionals, called dental therapists, is hoping to bring them treatment. Dental therapists receive specialized training, including how to perform local anesthetic, cleanings and apply sealants in kids and adults. Many kids on Medicaid don't see dentist

Only about one-third of U.S. children on Medicaid receives dental care in a single year, and how often these kids see a dentist depends on where they live, a new study finds. In 2007, the prevalence of visits to the dentist ranged from 12 percent in Nevada to 49 percent in Vermont, but didn't reach 50 percent in any state or the District of Columbia, the researchers found.
