Perfecting the assistant-driven Class II composite
Inside Dental Assisting
In a growing number of states, dental assistants are being allowed to place restorative materials. There is no doubt that a properly trained dental assistant with the right tools should be able to be successful in placing a restoration. That being said, the Class II composite resin restoration was, for many years, difficult for experienced dentists to place. However, recent improvements in the materials and tools used in placing Class II resins have dramatically changed and improved. Now it is possible for dental assistants to achieve the same successes they have in placing Class II amalgams with Class II resins.

Carol K. Oeder
CDA, COA, CPFDA, CDPMA, CRFDA, FADAA, LPN

Inside Dental Assisting
Carol K. Oeder became a dental assistant by accident — in the form of a persistent neighbor who knew of a job opening with a local general dentist. It would be the first of such accidents, as Oeder calls them. "I went in and applied for the job to get my neighbor to be quiet. Part of me hoped I wouldn't get hired because I was scared to death of the dentist," Oeder says. "I was very young. I didn't even like the smell or noises of a dental office. But much to my surprise, the doctor hired me."

Applications are now being accepted for the 2014 ADAA/DANB Scholarship. The American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA) and the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB) launched the scholarship program in 2013, as a way to help dental assistants realize their professional development plans.

The ADAA/DANB Scholarship will be awarded to dental assistants who demonstrate a strong commitment to career growth and lifelong learning. The winner(s) will be able to use the scholarship funds for professional activities such as continuing dental education, DANB exams or certification, some expenses associated with ADAA Fellowship or Mastership, or registration for a dental conference, among other possible activities.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants should download and complete the application and submit a letter of intent, along with any required documentation. The scholarship is open to all ADAA members and student members in good standing.
