Linda Brown — A dental assistant you should know
ADAA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

In the 10th grade, I heard about the Regional Occupation Program offered at the Oxnard AFB Facility for Dental Assistants, says Linda Brown. I was intrigued what I had heard about the program, so I investigated it further. The ROP offered the opportunity to become a dental assistant within one year. The ROP's focus is on very intensive education, focused on the specific trade, so I knew I'd be getting a quality educational experience. I signed up in my senior year and a year later I was out practicing my new trade. Over my 35 year career I worked for numerous dentists. The past 10 years, I decided to only do temporary work with dental offices so that I could have an opportunity to see how different doctors practice.

PDA stresses importance of screenings to detect oral cancer
Pennsylvania Dental Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Oral cancer claims more lives than leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid cancer, or skin cancer. In 2010, approximately 36,540 Americans were diagnosed with this largely preventable type of cancer that affects the mouth and throat; 7,880 died of the disease. Early detection is essential to dramatically reduce the number of deaths from oral cancer.

The Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA) urges you to take the necessary steps to protect yourself from oral cancer. It is important to visit the dentist twice a year and ensure that oral cancer screenings are a part of every checkup. An oral cancer examination can identify early signs of this disease, when it can be treated more successfully.

Stand taller for Posture Month
ADAA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

May was National Correct Posture Month, and it seems mom was even right about standing up straight. From athletes like Soul Surfer Bethany Hamilton who work with a postural alignment therapist, to the thousands of people with back pain and muscle aches being helped by Certified Posture Exercise Professionals, strengthening posture is important.

Improving your posture is not just about looking good. Studies show people with better posture really are healthier and actually live longer. From kids with backpacks or cane–carrying seniors, studies show poor posture is a major cause of back and neck pain for all ages, and over time often contributes to digestive and cardio–pulmonary problems.

Here are three things to help keep you standing tall: Take an annual posture picture; do posture strengthening exercises; and have smart posture habits. Want to read more? Click here. http://www.dentalassistant.org/journalsub.htm

How cavity-causing microbes invade heart
ScienceDaily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Scientists have discovered the tool that bacteria normally found in our mouths use to invade heart tissue, causing a dangerous and sometimes lethal infection of the heart known as endocarditis. The work raises the possibility of creating a screening tool — perhaps a swab of the cheek, or a spit test — to gauge a dental patient's vulnerability to the condition. More
