Dental Practice Management
For Angela Guanzini, RDA, CDD, it's all about dental assistants turning "suction into production" in the dental practice. I recently had a chance to sit down with Guanzini, the founder of NinjaDentistry.com, and talk about different ways that dental assistants could empower themselves and truly grasp the idea that dental assisting is a career, not just a stepping stone.

Dental practitioners could change workforce in Kansas, backers say
The Wichita Eagle
Several groups throughout Kansas are pushing for a new kind of dental provider – called registered dental practitioners – in an effort to alleviate the state's shortage of dentists. Dental practitioners – also called dental therapists in some states – are between a hygienist and a dentist and can perform such procedures as cleanings and extractions under the supervision of a dentist.

Should dental assistant discourage referrals after poor treatment?
Dentistry IQ
QUESTION: I'm a dental assistant who recently had an experience as a dental patient, and it was not pleasant. I had a consultation for a crown lengthening procedure, and the dentist I work for referred me to the periodontist. It was determined I need an implant, and they could do the implant I've been putting off. I came out with a $3,300 treatment plan, a surgery appointment for the end of July (my consult was in March), and my name on a cancellation list.

Communication skills you can learn from flying a kite
Dental Economics
The beach was perfect for our kite flying. It had all the required criteria — great wind gusting in from the ocean, a wide expanse of beach with soft sand, and enough clouds in the blue sky to prevent us being blinded by sunlight too bright for us to take our eyes off our kite for long. We hadn't flown our kite in years.

The top 5 things dental assistants do wrong … and how to change that
Dental Practice Management

Bad teeth? Blame your genes

Scientists say the health of your teeth depends on a combination of genetics and dental hygiene. We all know that person who never brushes, eats tons of candy and rarely (if ever) has a cavity. Then there are those of us who floss regularly, yet still end up breathing in the laughing gas once or twice a year.

2014 ADAA/DANB Scholarship Accepting Applications

Applications are now being accepted for the 2014 ADAA/DANB Scholarship. The American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA) and the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB) launched the scholarship program in 2013, as a way to help dental assistants realize their professional development plans.

The ADAA/DANB Scholarship will be awarded to dental assistants who demonstrate a strong commitment to career growth and lifelong learning. The winner(s) will be able to use the scholarship funds for professional activities such as continuing dental education, DANB exams or certification, some expenses associated with ADAA Fellowship or Mastership, or registration for a dental conference, among other possible activities.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants should download and complete the application and submit a letter of intent, along with any required documentation. The scholarship is open to all ADAA members and student members in good standing.

Applications will be accepted through July 15.
