ADA Urges Congress to Oppose Amalgam Resolution

Citing "the best available science," the American Dental Association urged members of Congress against supporting a resolution which "advances the misconception that because dental amalgam contains mercury, it is toxic." The resolution offered by Rep. Diane Watson (D-Calif.) was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Sex Steroids, Periodontal Health, and Tooth Loss in Older Men

Sex steroids have a significant effect on skeletal biology in men, with reduced levels being associated with lower skeletal bone mass and cortical thickness. The purpose of this study was to determine if sex steroids are associated with periodontitis and tooth loss in a cohort of 1210 older dentate men followed for three years. Periodontal measures included attachment loss, pocket depth, gingival bleeding, and number of teeth.

Measuring Gingival Crevicular Fluid

The generally accepted model of periodontal disease development and progression is bacterial infection by perio pathogens in oral biofilms, followed by the body's inflammatory response causing the majority of periodontal tissue destruction. This study compared the levels of cytokines in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) before and after periodontal therapy. Cytokines are regulatory proteins that are released as part of the inflammatory response. They play an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
