Nip cancellations and no-shows in the bud
Dentistry IQ
So you're having trouble with cancellations and no shows. Join the club. There is an epidemic of this issue in practices around the country. We could hang our hats on any number of reasons, with the biggest one being "the economy," but that doesn't solve the problem. We can also look to our methods and technologies of how we’re reaching our patients with our confirmation systems – postcards, emails, texts, phone calls, chauffeur-driven limousines! But let's look inward at something we can do to build value for our appointments – the patient debrief.

How long does the average person brush? Check out this infographic
Dentistry IQ
With a 79-year average life span brushing at four minutes per day, that comes to 1,440 minutes per year, or one day per year of brushing, which is 79 days throughout a person's lifetime. Sounds pretty reasonable. Now check out how long the average person really brushes, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. It comes in at less than half the recommended time, with a dismal 45 to 70 seconds per day, which is only 355 to 553 hours in a lifetime, or a very unacceptable 15 to 23 days.

Office manager has no enthusiasm as retirement nears. What to do?
Dentistry IQ
QUESTION: I'm concerned about a team member who has been with our practice for many years. She has basically checked out. As the office manager, she used to be the one who was excited about implementing new things, and was even the cheerleader for our team. The rest of our team has noticed her lack of enthusiasm, and we're becoming a little unmotivated ourselves. I'm not sure what steps to take – I'm worried she's just counting the days until she can retire. Any advice?

Better caries detection in the modern office
Dentistry IQ
Let's admit that the traditional methods of finding cavities — using our eyes, a radiograph, and the pick of an explorer — are a bit outdated. Our eyes can deceive us: is it a stained groove or actual decay? The shades of gray in a radiograph can lead to false positives, false negatives, and are only truly useful for interproximal decay. The explorer tip can be too large to fit into the full depths of fissures where decay lurks. Worse yet, a sharp explorer can break open a lesion that could have been conservatively remineralized.

The choice of overcoming mediocrity
RDH
We make choices each day that sustain us in reaching our goals or keep us stuck. If you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or complacent, then perhaps it is time to look at new choices. How do we become mediocre when we were brimming with enthusiasm for our profession at the graduation and pinning ceremonies? Remember the feeling of excitement to be finished with school and licensing exams? You were ready to change the world by improving the oral health of the public as recited at most pinning ceremonies.
