ADA announces professional, public drug abuse initiatives

The American Dental Association announced continuing education opportunities for prescribers of opioid medications and offered "strong support" for prescription drug abuse initiatives in professional and public communiques. "Medicine abuse has become a real problem in our communities," Dr. William R. Calnon, ADA president, said in a media release announcing the multi-pronged efforts. "As prescribers of narcotic pain medications, dentists are well positioned to educate patients about how to keep these drugs from becoming a source of harm." More



50 percent of Americans have gum disease

Researchers from Japan have succeeded in manufacturing an artificial tooth enamel that can be applied over existing teeth, preventing decay, making the teeth appear whiter, or even end the sensation of sensitive teeth, says Shigeki Hontsu, professor at Kinki University's Faculty of Biology-Oriented Science and Technology in Japan. Study links rapid weight gain with perio disease risk in men

Now a new study has found that tracking adiposity changes in men may help predict their risk of periodontitis progression. WHO: New virus not spreading easily between people

A new and potentially fatal virus from the same family as SARS which was discovered in a patient in London appears not to spread easily from person to person, the World Health Organization (WHO) said. In an update on the virus, which has so far killed a Saudi man and made a patient from Qatar critically ill, the United Nations health agency said it was working with international partners to understand the public health risk better. School begins clinic rotation focusing on pregnant patients

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry recently announced that it has instituted a new student clinic rotation for fourth-year D.D.S. students focusing on treating and triaging pregnant women. "Pregnant patients require certain methodology for comfort and safety during dental appointments, but most dental students don't ever get exposure to them," explained Dr. Rocio Quinonez, associate professor in the Schools of Dentistry and Medicine, Departments of Pediatric Dentistry and Pediatrics.
