How valuable are you?
American Dental Assistants Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Your alarm goes off. Is it really time to get up? You hit the snooze button not once, but four times. You tell yourself you need just a few more minutes, thinking how much the extra sleep would help. You finally drag yourself out of bed, but because you hit snooze so many times, you barely have enough time to get ready for work. You race around like a madwoman hoping you didn't forget your lunch as you head out the door. You hit every red light on the way, and when you finally get in the door you realize you left the instruments last night to be autoclaved this morning. You had thought, "I'll be in early tomorrow to do them." What a way to start the day! More

Being ears for each other on the good and bad days
Dental Assisting Digest via Dentistry IQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Kevin Henry, editor of Dental Assisting Digest, discuss the importance of networking for dental assistants. No dental assistant should be an island, Henry said. If you don't have a group of dental assistants that you can talk to and share your joys and/or frustrations, you need to become part of a community where you can discuss problems and solutions and learn from others. More on surface disinfectants
Dental Economics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
disinfection can be eliminated in many cases by the use of barriers. There are so many new or enhanced products available; it's enough to make your head spin sometimes. It can certainly confuse team members who choose and use the products. Hopefully, the information in this column will clear up some of the confusion and make the product selection process simpler. Disease we should all be talking about; Mouth cancer cases have hit an all time high
Dentistry iQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Look at almost any cancer and you will see that survival rates are improving. Growing awareness about symptoms and better treatments are driving death rates down but, worryingly, mouth cancer is bucking the trend. This form of the disease claims about 2,000 lives a year and cases are up by 25 percent over the last decade. It is also clear the disease, once considered an old man's condition and linked mainly to smoking, is affecting more young people than ever. A quarter of cases are now in the under-55s. More

Jailers worry about dental floss as a weapon
The Associated Press via The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dental floss may prevent toothaches, but it's given jailers plenty of headaches. When a group of New York prisoners sued last month to demand access to dental floss, officials said they had to consider "security issues." As it turns out, jail — and jailbreak — history is tightly tangled with the stringy decay fighter. In Texas, officials believe a prisoner used floss to cut his way out of his cell, then jumped a fellow inmate and knifed him to death. More

New Jersey Society of Periodontists explains the periodontal disease connection
Dentistry IQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
November is American Diabetes Month, and the New Jersey Society of Periodontists (NJSP) would like patients and caregivers alike to be aware of the link between periodontal disease, a chronic inflammatory disease of the gums, and diabetes. "If you have diabetes, you are at higher risk for developing infections, including periodontal disease," explains Dr. Scott Zirkin, president of the NJSP. "These infections can impair the ability to process and/or utilize insulin, which may cause your diabetes to be more difficult to control and your infection to be more severe than a person with the disease." Bright and white smiles with dental veneers
Dental Health Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dental veneers are thin sheets of special porcelain which are placed over the teeth. However, before placing these veneers the dentist will need to eliminate a small portion of the dental enamel on the front of the teeth, in order to make a perfect adhesion between the sheets and the tooth. Sometimes the natural teeth are also filed down in order to make them even, so that the veneers will look perfect. More
